The Oro Verde Holding and Development Corporation (OVHDC) mango plantation is located on the island province of Guimaras -- a short 15-minute boat ride from the historic city of Iloilo. The 240-hectare farm includes 45,000 carabao mango trees, considered to be the best mango variety in the world. Incorporated in 1986, OVHDC is a pioneer in the mango production business. OVHDC's corporate system of management has made Oro Verde a 'show window of the mango industry', attracting visits by guests and industry professionals from around the world. The Island Province of Guimaras has earned its niche as the 'mango capital of the Philippines'. Highly regarded as a producer of one of the tastiest mangoes in the world, Guimaras is serious about its agricultural products. Currently under strict quarantine measures, the island does not allow entry of mangoes from the outside, assuring that it remains 'seed and pulp weevil free'. This gives Oro Verde a strong advantage over other producers in the country. OVHDC's mangoes are exported and prized, not only in neighboring Asian countries such as Japan and Hong Kong, but also in the U.S. and Australia where quarantine policies are very stringent. Aside from producing export quality fresh mangoes, Oro Verde maintains a nursery of (asexually-propagated) mango seedlings for commercial purposes. Also, a mini-processing plant absorbs locally sourced mangoes and converts them into commercial products such as mango puree, dried mango fruit bar and mango pickles |
